About
I have always found myself drawn in several directions other than singing, from the early stages of my study I have enjoyed coaching other singers, organising projects both as a singer and conductor and a continued study of vocal physiology and performance psychology. These interests roughly fall into three strands: singing, conducting and teaching.
As a singer I’ve performed as a soloist internationally for a number of orchestras and opera companies. An early passion of mine was baroque music and this is evident in the high proportion of baroque work in my career with conductors including William Christie, Harry Bicket, René Jacobs and Trevor Pinnock. However, I equally enjoy a whole host of other music and have performed with orchestras and opera companies including Copenhagen Philharmonic, Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra and BBCSSO (Stravinksy Pulcinella), BBC Symphony Orchestra (Lili & Nadia Boulanger and Berlioz Les nuits d’été), City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (Vaughan Williams Pastoral Symphony & Stanford Requiem) and Glyndebourne Festival Opera (Poulenc Les Mamelles de Tirésias & Britten TBA).
Teaching and coaching has always been something i’ve enjoyed. Alongside my own vocal development, learning about the voice and how to help others develop and understand their voices better has been a great interest to me. As well as in-depth knowledge about the vocal mechanism I am also interested in working with the musician as a whole. Addressing performance fears and finding new goals through understanding issues regarding perfectionism, lifestyle and peak-performance. I enjoy working with a range of musicians and also value the importance of understanding how people at different stages have different learning requirements. In 22/23 I will study on the PgCert Performing Arts Medicine at University College London, supported by a Royal Philharmonic Society Enterprise Award. I have recently been appointed Head of Vocal Studies at Highgate School in London where I will have oversight for the solo-singing and manage the team of singing teachers, as well as continuing to coach musicians more widely throughout the school.
As an artistic director / creative more widely I have been involved in setting up a number of projects and festivals including the Devon Song Festival and SongSpiel. Both have involved bringing classical song to new audiences. I have studied conducting with Alice Farnham and was invited to assist Barbara Hannigan with the Munch Philharmonic on Copland’s Music for the Theatre before the Covid-19 pandemic. Conducting and leadership are areas of enormous interest to me and I believe in fostering an environment where people are empowered to use their respective skills to the best of their abilities. In December 2020, under the auspices of ‘The Assembled Company’ I produced and conducted a streamed concert of Schütz Christmas Story for HarrisonParrott Virtual Circle with members of Equilibrium Young Artists and some fantastic young rising stars of the UK music scene. I hope to lead more concerts drawing together likeminded musicians in the future.
